A Big Weekend The Twilight Food Festival It’s been a really big weekend in town! The Twilight food festival was a big hit this year with loads of hungry people queuing up to taste all the scrumptious delicacies from around the world. I couldn’t even pick a favourite, they were all awesome. Merredin Community Show 2016 That was Friday night and then early on Saturday morning the Merredin Show float parade treated us to a spectacular peek of what was ahead at the showgrounds. ‘The Men’s Shed’ lead the parade, hot cars, and dressed floats accompanied them, Belly dancers, Army Cadets, stiltwalkers and lots more. I even saw Lora from Tyre Right throwing bags of lollies.  This year was another very good Community Show with crafts on display that made me feel proud to live here, an awesome selection of stalls and lots of yummy food. Did you enjoy the show?...

Christmas in Merredin

Christmas in Merredin

Dec 23, 2015

Christmas in Merredin 2015 The last three weeks have been a big lead up to Christmas in Merredin and has kept us very busy. The Christmas Crafters opened up the seasons shopping for us with a stunning array of extremely high quality hand crafted gifts. The Carols by candlelight had a great turn out, schools had their concerts and business had their Christmas parties. Then of course, the number one favourite…Gala Night. Oh What A Night! I’m so pleased they brought Gala night back. Children of Merredin found a new friend called Rudy. He is never in one spot for very long and it was fun trying to find his hiding place each day and steal a photo for Facebook. Magical words on the visitor centre lawn, White Christmas trees at the entrance to town, Tyre Christmas trees and even snowflakes and snowmen. Well it’s Christmas Eve in Merredin 2015 and Merredin Today would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.  ...

Hands for Earth & Sustainable house day

Hands for Earth & Sustainable house day

Sep 28, 2015

Hands for Earth William Last with Sheree Lowe and Michelle Marks conducted an introduction talk at the Merredin Community Gardens last weekend as part of the Merredin Sustainable House Day tour. William showed us a short, but very powerful video presentation and then told us how it all started with HFE and how many community members come along and make a huge difference to our Peak area. The name ‘Hands for earth’ was created by the group and represents ‘hands on.. for mother earth’ and was established in 2014 William and Michelle Marks of Western Reptile Rescue Inc have been exploring the reserve and photographing it’s wildlife and flora since Since 1986 William spoke about how Hands for earth was born. That as a local wildlife photographer and spending a great deal of time in the area, he was continually seeing the build-up of rubbish in and around Merredin peak. Over the years, this build up, as well as the disappearance of some of the animals that we had been photographing over that time, some of which we had photos and records of for 6 years or so. Then seeing different animals using rubbish as homes instead of their natural habitat and seeing piles of rubbish discarded in amongst wild flowers which is one of our main tourist attractions. He went on to say: The different people we have involved are wildlife and rescue groups who have also been in touch with department of parks and wildlife, the local wild flower society, and as the Merredin Peak is part of Narji Narji land we approached the Narji Narji elder here who is also part the group now. Many likeminded people who care about the Merredin Peak are becoming interested and offering to help out with its conservation. William said “I would like to see other rural areas take on a Hands for earth project if they think they need one and maybe we can make a difference somewhere else, maybe Australia or even world wide Hands for Earth is not about who to blame for the rubbish being there in the first place. It’s about cleaning it up and getting the job done. Restoring...

Golden Heartlands Bike Tour

Golden Heartlands Bike Tour

Sep 21, 2015

Golden Heartlands Bike Tour Saturday 12th September was the start of an invigorating bike tour beginning at Midland. The riders arrived in Merredin by coach from Midland, where they enjoyed a nourishing lunch before setting off on a leisurely 58K ride to Bruce Rock. The riders enjoyed the dazzling landscapes as they passed through vast tracts of farmland sown with swaying crops of wheat and colourful yellow canola. Hot coffee and a scrumptious dinner was waiting for them in Bruce Rock where they pitched tents on the oval and enjoyed chatting to the locals at the Bruce Rock Recreational Centre. Sunday morning and they were off on a 75K ride to Kellerberrin. Over the next 9 days they will ride to towns like Quairading, Cunderdin, Wyalkatchem, Meckering, Northam and then back to Midland. The Golden Pipeline which was built more than 100 years ago by engineer C Y O’Connor and is still one of the longest fresh water pipelines on Earth, is a highlight of the tour and something they were all looking forward to seeing. As well as some of the historic water pumping stations along the pipeline as they enjoy the return journey from Merredin to Midland....

Nukarni Country Roundup

Nukarni Country Roundup Congratulations Tom and Olga Kittyea, on the 12th Nukarni Country Roundup, everyone had a lovely time and it was all in support of The Royal Flying Doctor Service. There was the biggest, coolest hayshed ever, lots of people smiling, a stage, a dance floor, several BBQ’s smoking, loads of beer chilling, good wine, coffee and people who like to sing and dance. Add a fund raising auction and you have one very successful evening. The local community getting together to raise money for a very special service we all need at one stage in our lives and is vital to our wellbeing.  Entry to the evening is by donation, entertainment is voluntary, tea and coffee for RFDS, cakes made and donated, gas supplied for BBQ’s, auction, raffle and door prizes supplied by local business and all money goes to RFDS …Just Superb! This is the sort of thing you move to the country to see. A big thank you to everyone who helped and supported this wonderful...
